Ernest Valdemar is a fictional character. He is the central character (but not the protagonist) in Edgar Allan Poe’s short story and journalistic hoax “The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar.” I have used the Valdemar character as an avatar/pseudonym on the Internet for over ten years.

NOTE: The banner image is a cropped version of the amazing Harry Clarke’s Arts and Crafts/Expressionist illustration of Poe’s original story. It is often mistakenly attributed to Aubrey Beardsley. If you’re not a huge fan of Poe in all media, you may not know what Clarke can do. You can view the uncropped image here. And then you should check out Harry Clarke.

  1. Adding, if I should manage to piss you off thoroughly enough, there are ways to correlate “M Valdemar,” “M. Valdemar,” “ErnestValdemar,” “Ernest Valdemar,” my real-world initials, my full real-world name, and both my home and work email addresses. Once you figure that out, it’s a hop, skip, and a jump to my White Pages and census information. Have at it, trolls. It’s a pseudonym, not an anonym. There are no mysteries, there are only greater and lesser puzzles to figure out.
